Maria wins first match in Rome

Maria is through to the second round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, Italy after she defeated No.16 seed Ashleigh Barty of Australia.

Maria won 7-5 3-6 6-2 in two hours and 30 minutes.

In the first set, Maria got an early break to 2-1. At 5-4, serving for the set, Maria was broken but quickly re-grouped as she won the next two games to take the set 7-5 in 50 minutes.

After dropping the second set 6-3, Maria broke Barty’s serve to lead 3-1 in the third set and won three of the next four games to book her spot in the second round.

In Wednesday’s second round match, Maria will play world no.34 Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia. Maria has played the 29-year-old six times before and the series is tied 3-3. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
