Maria started her 2015 French Open campaign with a win as she defeated Kaia Kanepi of Estonia. Maria won 6-2 6-4 in an hour and 24 minutes on a windy day in Paris.
On Philippe-Chatrier court, Maria got the first break of the match when her opponent hit a backhand wide to lead 2-0. Kanepi got the break back in the fifth game, but Maria re-took control of the set by winning the next three games to take the set 6-2 in 36 minutes.
In the second set, Maria got the first break in the fourth game to lead 3-1 when the Estonian hit a backhand error. Kanepi immediately got the break back in the next game to get the set back on serve. In the final game of the match on Kanepi’s serve, Maria broke and booked her spot in the last 64 when Kanepi double-faulted.
In Wednesday’s second round match, Maria will play world No.91 Vitalia Diatchenko of Russia. Maria has never played the 24-year-old before.
