Maria wins first match in Madrid

Maria is through to the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open after a 6-2 6-3 win over Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland. The match lasted an hour and 21 minutes as Maria advanced to the last 32.

It was a tough first round opponent for Maria as Bacsinszky has won two titles this year and climbed 27 spots in the WTA rankings to 21 throughout 2015 but Maria broke the Swiss player three times in the first set to take the set 6-2.

Maria just needed one break of serve to lead 5-3 in the second set as she then held her serve in the next game to clinch the win.

Maria had 28 winners to 18 unforced errors to her opponent’s 12 winners to 17 unforced errors throughout the match.

After the win, Maria said: “Facing an opponent I’d lost to previously in Wuhan in two sets, and someone that’s been playing really good tennis this year, I knew this would be a tough match. There’s no doubt about this and I was ready after having a good practice week.”

In the second round, Maria will play world No.110 Mariana Duque Mariño of Colombia. Maria has played the 25-year-old once before at Acapulco earlier this year in the second round and won 6-1 6-2.
