Maria wins first match in Madrid

Maria is through to the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open in Madrid, Spain after a 6-4 6-1 win over world no.37 Mihaela Buzarnescu of Romania.

The match lasted an hour and 22 minutes as Maria scored her first win on clay this year.

In the first set, Maria got the first break to lead 4-2 when she hit a stunning forehand winner. Serving for the set at 5-3, Maria was broken but re-grouped in the next game as she broke her opponent’s serve and Maria won the set on her sixth set point when Buzarnescu hit a backhand wide.

The momentum Maria gained from winning the first set continued in the second set as she lost only one game as she booked her spot in the second round.

In the second round, Maria will face another Romanian, Irina-Camelia Begu. Maria has played the 27-year-old three times before and leads the series 3-0. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
