Maria wins 600th match at Australian Open

Maria is through to the last 16 of the Australian Open after a 6-1 6-7 6-0 win over Lauren Davis of the United States. The match was played under the roof in Melbourne due to rain and lasted two hours and 11 minutes.

This is Maria’s 600th win of her career and is the 17th female player to achieve this. In the post-match on court interview, Maria said: “Oh wow, I’ve won 600 matches? A friendly reminder that I’m getting older?”

The first set lasted 26 minutes as Maria broke her opponent’s serve three times and a forehand error on set point gave Maria the set 6-1.

In set two, Davis took a 4-2 lead. In the next game, Maria got the set back on serve by breaking Davis. Both players held all of their service games to force a tie-break which the American won 7-5. The set took 75 minutes to complete as Maria dropped her first set this tournament.

Maria re-grouped in the third set, as she steamrolled her way through the set, not dropping a game to advance to the fourth round.

In Sunday’s fourth round match, Maria will face No.12 seed Belinda Bencic of Switzerland. Maria has never played the 18-year-old before.
