In the last match of the day at the US Open, Maria is through to the fourth round.
Under the lights, Maria defeated Sofia Kenin of the United States 7-5 6-2 in an hour and 42 minutes.
The first set took 66 minutes as Maria took a 4-1 lead against her 18-year-old opponent but Kenin came back to win three games in a row to level the set 4-4. Maria then won three of the next four games to win the set and won set point on a powerful forehand winner.
The second set took about half the time of the first set as Maria broke Kenin to lead 2-0 but Kenin managed to break Maria’s serve to get the set back on serve in the fifth game. Up 3-2, Maria won three straight games to book her spot in the last 16.
In Sunday’s fourth round match, Maria will play No.16 seed Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia. Maria has never played the 27-year-old before.
