Maria is through to the fourth round of the French Open in Paris after a dazzling display against Paula Ormaechea. It took only 51 minutes for Maria to record a 6-0 6-0 win over the Argentinian.
This is the fifth time in Grand Slam matches that Maria has won a match without dropping a game (2010 US Open vs. Capra, 2012 Roland Garros vs. Cadantu and 2013 Australian Open vs. Puchkova & Doi).
At deuce in the first game, drops of rain started to fall and play was suspended. When play resumed after a short delay, Maria got the first break to lead 2-0. Maria broke again to lead 4-0 and in the sixth game, Maria broke Ormaechea’s serve for the third consecutive time to take the set 6-0 in exactly 30 minutes.
A stunning crosscourt forehand winner gave Maria the first break of the second set to lead 2-0. Maria broke again in the fourth game and in the final game at 40-0 on Ormaechea’s serve, Ormaechea hit a backhand long as Maria wrapped up victory.
