Maria through to second Wimbledon final

Maria is through to her second Wimbledon final after she defeated Sabine Lisicki of Germany.  Maria won 6-4 6-3 in an hour and 27 minutes.

This is Maria’s first Grand Slam final since the beginning of 2008 at the Australian Open.

Lisicki got off to a strong start in the first set as she built a 3-0 lead.  Maria got the set back on serve at 3-2 when Lisicki hit the ball into the net.  At 4-4 Maria broke Lisicki to serve for the set and and then Maria holds her own serve to take the set 6-4 when she serves an ace down the middle.

The momentum Maria gained in the first set carried over to the second set as she broke Lisicki’s serve in the first game to love.  Maria got another break to lead 3-0 when Lisicki hit a backhand into the net.  Lisicki was able to break Maria in the next game but Maria broke Lisicki back to lead 4-1 when Lisicki hit a shot wide.  The next game was a long game on Maria’s serve which she eventually held to lead 5-1.  Lisicki won the next two games but Maria broke Lisicki in the next game to book her place in the Wimbledon final.

In the final to be played on Saturday at 14.00 local time on Centre Court, Maria will play No.8 seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic who is playing her first ever Grand Slam final.  Maria has played Kvitova once before at Memphis last year and Maria won 6-4 6-3.

Maria provisionally moves up to No.5 in the WTA rankings with 6141 points.  If Maria takes the title she will move up to No.3.
