Maria through to Rome 3rd Round

Maria is through to the third round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, Italy after she defeated Monica Puig of Puerto Rico. Maria won 6-3 7-5 in an hour and 31 minutes.

This is Maria 12th consecutive win on clay this year and her 16th straight win on the clay courts in the Italian capital.

Maria started the match slowly as she was broken in the first game but she got the break back in the fourth game to level the set 2-2. Maria broke again to lead 5-3 and in the next game, held her serve to love to take the set 6-3 in 37 minutes.

Puig got another early break as she broke to lead 2-0 in the second set. Maria got the break back in the seventh game to get the set back on serve. A shot in the net by Puig gave Maria a break to lead 6-5 and Maria wrapped up the win on her service game as Puig hit a return long on match point.

In Thursday’s third round match, Maria will play No.11 seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia. Maria has played the 26-year-old ten times before and leads the series 8-2. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
