Maria through to Madrid Quarters

Maria is through to the quarters of the Mutua Madrid Open after she defeated Sabine Lisicki of Germany. Maria won the third round match 6-2 7-5 in an hour and 40 minutes.

Out of the eight games played in the first set, six of those were breaks of serve. Despite losing her serve twice in the set, Maria was always in control of the set and won it 6-2.

Lisicki had a 3-1 lead in the second set. In the fifth game, Lisicki hit a shot wide as Maria broke to get the set back on serve. In the tenth game, Maria saved two set points on her serve and broke Lisicki’s serve in the following game when Lisicki hit a forehand into the net. Maria came out to serve for the match in the next game and at 40-15, Lisicki hit a return long as Maria went through to the last eight.

In Friday’s quarter-final match, Maria will play Kaia Kanepi of Estonia. Maria has played the 27-year-old once before in the quarters at Roland Garros last year and won 6-2 6-3. The match will be played on Manolo Santana Court and is the second match of the day and the schedule begins at 10.50 local time.
