Maria through to last 32 in Paris

Maria is through to the third round of the French Open in Paris after she defeated Donna Vekic of Croatia. Maria won 7-5 6-4 in an hour and 57 minutes.

A trade of breaks started off the match.  In the eighth game, Maria broke Vekic’s serve when her opponent hit a backhand long. In the next game, Maria was broken serving for the set but at 6-5, Maria broke Vekic again when netted a forehand as Maria won the set 7-5 in 63 minutes.

Maria got the first break in the second set when she hit a forehand winner on the line to lead 2-0. Maria was broken in the next game but broke Vekic again to lead 3-1. Maria was broken serving for the match at 5-4 but broke in the next game to take the match after a long deuce game on her fifth match point with a forehand return winner.

In Saturday’s third round match, Maria will face No.6 seed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic. Maria has played the 26-year-old once before in the Fed Cup final in 2015 and won 6-3 6-4.
