Maria battled through to the quarters at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo after she defeated No.13 seed Julia Goerges of Germany. Maria won 7-6 (4) 7-6 (4) in two hours and 4 minutes.
Maria came back from being a set-point down at 4-5 30-40 in the second set to win the set and the match in a tie-break.
After the match, Maria said: “It was a tough match. Two sets go to tiebreak, I was pleased that, although I really didn’t play my best in the match, I stepped it up in the tiebreaks and that was the difference.”
In Thursday’s quarter-final match, Maria will face No.5 seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic. They have played twice before and the series is tied 1-1. The last meeting was in the Wimbledon final this year which Kvitova won in straight sets. The match is due to start at around 19.00 local time on Centre Court.
In the WTA rankings, Maria remains in 2nd place with 6450 points.
