Maria defeated No.32 seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus to advance to the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. Maria won 6-4 6-3 in an hour and 51 minutes.
This match was highly anticipated when the draw was released a week ago and Azarenka got the first break of the match to lead 4-3 in the first set. Maria immediately got the break back and it proved to be a big turning point as she won eight of the next eleven games to advance to the last 16.
With the win tonight, Maria has equalled the head-to-head series with the Belarusian 7-7. Maria has won the last three meetings.
In Tuesday’s fourth round match, Maria will play No.15 seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy. The match is scheduled to be the fourth match on Stadium 1 and the schedule of play begins at 11.00 AM local time.
