Maria’s run at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand is continuing as she defeated Renata Voracova of the Czech Republic 6-3 7-5 to reach the quarters.
The windy conditions was a factor for both players and in the 2nd set Maria was down 0-3 and 3-5 but battled back to take the match in 2 sets.
After the match, Maria said: “It was a little bit sloppy. It was certainly up and down.” “I started a little bit slow and she had opportunities to go 4-1 in the first set and it was lucky I just hung in there and then I started playing better, a little more solid and then she started making a few more errors.
“Then it was up and down in the second set, we kept breaking each other. “The wind was swirling a bit and it was just about adjusting today. These are the type of matches where you really have to get through and adjust.”
In Thursday’s quarter-final match, Maria will play Greta Arn of Hungary. Maria has never played the 88th ranked player before.
