Maria is through to the fourth round at Wimbledon after a 6-4 6-3 win over No.14 seed Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania. The match lasted an hour and 23 minutes as Maria advanced to the last 16 on Court 1.
After a trade of breaks at the beginning for the first set, Maria broke in the final game of the set to take the 6-4 with a powerful forehand winner. The set lasted 43 minutes.
Maria stormed into a 5-0 lead in the second set but Begu then won three games in a row. At 5-3, Maria stepped up to serve for the match for a second time and she delivered as she won match point when Begu hit a forehand return wide.
In Monday’s fourth round match, Maria will play world No.34 Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan. Maria has played the 21-year-old once before at the Australian Open this year in the third round and won 6-1 6-1.
