Maria started her 2014 Mutua Madrid Open campaign with a win as she defeated Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic 6-1 6-2 in 63 minutes in the Spanish capital.
Maria continued her good form from winning the title in Stuttgart last week as she raced into a 5-0 lead. Serving for the set at 5-1, Maria won the set when Koukalova hit a shot wide in exactly 30 minutes.
After two consecutive breaks at the beginning of set two, Maria got the decisive break to lead 2-1 when Koukalova hit a shot into the next. Maria won the next two games to lead 4-1. Koukalova got one of the breaks back in the next game but Maria took control of the set by taking the next two games to wrap up victory over the Czech player.
In the second round, Maria will be up against world no.57 Christina McHale of the United States. Maria has played the 21-year old three times before and leads the series 3-0. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
