Maria started her US Open series campaign with a win at the Rogers Cup in Montreal as she won 4-6 6-3 6-1 in two hours and 11 minutes against Garbine Muguruza of Spain to advance to the third round.
In Maria’s first match in over a month, Maria got off to a slow start against the Spaniard as she dropped her serve in the opening game. Maria got the break back in the middle of the set, but it wasn’t enough as Muguruza took control and won the set 6-4 in 61 minutes.
Muguruza took a 2-1 break in the second set but Maria re-grouped and won five of the next six games to win the set 6-3 in 39 minutes. Maria won set point when Muguruza hit a forehand return wide.
The momentum continued in the third set as Maria broke Muguruza’s serve twice to lead 4-0 and dropped only one more game as she booked her spot in the last 16.
In Thursday’s third round match to be played on Central at 12.00 PM local time, Maria will face No.14 seed Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain. Maria has played the Spaniard once before at Indian Wells last year in the third round and won 7-5 6-3.
