Maria defeated British wildcard Samantha Murray in her first round match at Wimbledon. On Court 1, Maria won 6-1 6-0 in 58 minutes.
Maria got off to a slow start in her first grass match of year but in the fourth game she broke Murray’s serve to lead 3-1 with a backhand winner. Maria broke again to lead 5-1 and wrapped up the set on her serve in the next game to win the set 6-1 in 34 minutes.
The run of form continued in the second set as Maria didn’t drop a game to book her spot in the last 64.
In Thursday’s second round match, Maria will play world no.85 Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland. Maria has played the 25-year-old once before in Zurich in 2006 and won 6-4 6-3.
