Maria started her Wimbledon campaign with a win on Centre Court as she defeated British wild card Johanna Konta. Maria won 6-2 6-2 in an hour and 22 minutes.
The first set lasted 38 minutes as Maria broke to lead 3-1 and in the final game as she won set point when her opponent hit a forehand long.
Konta broke Maria’s serve in the first game of the second set but Maria then won four straight games to lead 4-1. Maria won two of the next three games to book her spot in the last 64.
In Wednesday’s second round match, Maria will play world No.123 Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands. Maria has never played the 23-year-old before.
