Maria has booked her spot in the second round of the US Open in New York as she defeated Melinda Czink of Hungary 6-2 6-2 in 67 minutes.
Throughout the match, Maria had a first serve percentage of 61% and won 85% points on first serve and 41% on second serve. Maria had 23 winners and 16 unforced errors.
At 2-2 in the first set, Maria got the first break of the match when Czink hit a shot wide. Maria broke again to lead 5-2 and in the next game held her serve to 30 and hit an ace to win the set 6-2 in 31 minutes.
Maria got two breaks in the second set to lead 3-0 and her run of seven straight games ended as Czink got one of the breaks back. At 5-2, Maria held her serve to 30 and won the match when Czink hit a shot into the net.
In Wednesday’s second round match, Maria will play world number 78 Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain. Maria has never played the 31-year-old before.
