Maria starts Australian Open campaign with a win

Maria won her first round match at the Australian Open in Melbourne after a 6-1 6-4 win over Tatjana Maria of Germany.

The match lasted an hour and eighteen minutes as Maria booked her spot in the second round.

In the first set, Maria got the first break to lead 2-0 but was immediately broken in the next game. Maria got the momentum back as she won four games in a row to take the set 6-1.

The second set was closer as Maria’s opponent took a 3-1 lead but Maria came back to level the set 3-3. Maria then won three of the next four games to win the match and sealed the win with an ace on her first match point.

In Thursday’s second round match, Maria will play no.14 seed Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia. Maria has played the 27-year-old twice before and the series is tied 1-1. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
