Maria starts 2019 campaign with a win

On New Year’s Eve, Maria scored her first win of 2019 at the Shenzhen Open in Shenzhen, China as she defeated Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland.

In Maria’s first match since the US Open in September, Maria won the match 6-2 7-6 in an hour and 42 minutes.

Maria won five straight games in the first set to lead 5-2. In the final game of the set, Maria won her serve to love and won the set when Bacsinszky netted a forehand return of serve.

In the second set, Maria went down 3-5 but won three of the next four games to force a tie-break which she won 7-3 when her opponent netted a backhand.

In Wednesday’s second round match, Maria will face world no.309 Xinyu Wang of China. Maria has never played the 17-year-old before.
