Maria starts 2018 with a win in Shenzhen

On the first day of 2018, Maria scored a win as she defeated Mihaela Buzarnescu of Romania at the Shenzhen Open in Shenzhen, China.

Maria won 6-3 6-0 in an hour and 20 minutes.

During the on-court interview, Maria said:
“It’s quite remarkable to see a full stadium for a first round. It’s my first time here, so I didn’t know what to expect!”

Throughout the match, Maria served three aces and had a first serve percentage of 63%. Maria won 79% of points on first serve and 47% of points on second serve. Maria broke Buzarnescu’s serve five times and dropped her own serve once.

In the second round to be played on Tuesday (third match on Centre Court, schedule starts at 11.00 AM local time), Maria will face world no.70 Alison Riske of the United States. Maria has played the 27-year-old twice before and leads the series 2-0. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
