Maria is through to the quarters of the Brisbane International after a 6-1 6-0 win over Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan. Maria won the match in 62 minutes for her first win of 2015.
Maria came out firing in the first set as she wrapped up the set in only 23 minutes without dropping a game as she had a first serve percentage of 77% and won 71% (10/14 points) on first serve and 50% (2/4 points) on second serve.
In the second set, Maria took a 3-0 lead and in the next game, Maria’s run of nine straight games ended as Shvedova won her first game of the match. Maria got the second break of the set to lead 5-2 when Shevedova netted a forehand. Maria came out to serve for the match and won match point when Shvedova hit a shot long.
In Thursday’s quarter-final match, Maria will face either No.7 seed Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain or Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia.
