Maria retires injured in Wuhan

Maria had to pull out of the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open in Wuhan, China against Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic. The score was 7-6 6-7 2-1 when Maria pulled out due to an arm injury.

Maria got the first break of the match with a punishing forehand return to lead 5-3. Serving for the match, Maria was broken as her opponent levelled the set 5-5. The set was decided by a tie-break which Maria won 7-1 on her eighth set point when Strycova hit a return out.

In the second set, a volley wide by Strycova gave Maria the first break to lead 4-3. Strycova got the break back in the next game and like the first set, the set was taken to a tie-break which Strycova won 7-4.

Maria played one game in the third set, had an injury time-out, played two more games and withdrew.

Maria said:
“I’ve had my fair share of serious injuries, and I know this is far from it, something I just have to take care of. I mean obviously Singapore and Fed Cup is a big priority for myself. I’ll do everything in order to be healthy for that.”
