Maria qualifies for WTA Finals semis

Maria is through to the semis of the BNP Paribas WTA Finals in Singapore after a 7-5 6-1 win over Flavia Pennetta of Italy. The match lasted an hour and 27 minutes as Pennetta played her final match of her career.

Before the match started, Maria had already qualified for the semis after Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland defeated Simona Halep of Romania in the other red group match.

Pennetta started the match strongly by breaking in the first game. In the eighth game, Maria broke with a backhand swinging volley to level the set 4-4. A forehand swinging volley game Maria a second break to take the set 7-5 in 53 minutes.

As the match went on, Maria took control and broke in the second game with a drop shot. A double-fault from Pennetta gave Maria another break to lead 5-1. Maria stepped up to serve for the match in the next game and delivered as she won the set 6-1.

Maria heads into Saturday’s semis unbeaten in round robin play. Maria’s semi-final opponent will be known on Friday after the final matches have been played in the white group.
