Maria passes first test in Australia

Maria started her Australian Open 2011 campaign with a win today as she defeated Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand 6-1 6-3 in an hour and 19 minutes.

Maria opened up proceedings on the first day of action at Rod Laver Arena and got off to a shaky start as she dropped her serve to love but then rebounded as she took the next six games to take the set 6-1 in 25 minutes.

Tanasugarn put up more of a challenge in the 2nd set as she took a 3-1 lead. Maria then came back to take the next five games to take the set and the match.

In Wednesday’s second round match, Maria will play Virginie Razzano of France. They have never played before.

In the rankings, Maria provisionally moves up to no.14 with 2756 points but as this is a Grand Slam lots of things can happen with the rankings as there are many points on offer.
