Maria’s Wimbledon campaign is over in the fourth round after she lost to No.9 seed Angelique Kerber of Germany. Maria lost 6-7 6-4 4-6 in two hours and 36 minutes.
The match was delayed from Monday due to rain but was played on Centre Court in the sunshine. Kerber broke Maria in the first game of set one. In the tenth game, Maria got the break back to level the set 5-5. The set was eventually decided by a tie-break which Kerber won 7-4.
Two breaks of serve started the second set and Maria got the decisive break of the set with a backhand winner to lead 4-3. In the final game of the set, Kerber hit a return into the net as Maria won the set 6-4.
Kerber raced into a 5-2 lead in the deciding set before Maria managed to get the set back on serve at 5-4. After a long deuce game on Maria’s serve in the next game, a backhand long from Maria gave Kerber the win on the seventh match point.
The Rogers Cup in Montreal will be Maria’s next tournament beginning on August 4th.
