Maria’s Rogers Cup campaign was halted in the first round by No.16 seed Anett Kontaveit of Estonia.
Maria fought hard against the 23-year-old under the lights at the Aviva Center but went down 6-4 3-6 4-6 in two hours and 41 minutes.
After the match, Maria said:
“I put a lot of work in to get to this stage, so I think to finish off this match is good. Definitely not the result I would have liked, but overall feeling pretty good about it.”
The next tournament for Maria will be the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati which begins next week.
