Maria is out of the Rogers Cup in Montreal after she lost 2-6 6-4 2-6 to No.14 seed Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain in the third round.
At 0-3 0-30 on Maria’s serve in the first set, there was a short rain delay and play was suspended. When play resumed, Maria won two games out of the five games played but it wasn’t enough as Suarez Navarro won the set 6-2.
Suarez Navarro was up a break in the second set but Maria turned the set around by breaking Suarez Navarro’s serve to lead 5-4 and in the next game held her serve to love and won set point when a shot by Suarez Navarro floated long.
In the third set, Suarez Navarro broke to lead 3-1 and in the next game Maria got the break back with a stunning forehand winner. In the sixth game there was a another rain delay after one point was played. On the resumption of play, Maria was unable to win a game as Suarez Navarro advanced to the last eight.
