Maria’s run at the Australian Open in Melbourne is over as she lost 6-3 4-6 1-6 in two hours and twelve minutes to no.20 seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia in the fourth round.
Maria raced into a 5-2 lead in the first set and was broken serving for the set but broke Cibulkova in the next game to take the first set 6-3 in 39 minutes.
In the second set, Cibulkova raced into a 5-0 lead. Maria took the next four games but it wasn’t enough as Cibulkova won the next game to take the set 6-4 in 42 minutes. At the end of the second set, Maria took an injury time-out and when play resumed, Cibulkova built a 5-1 lead and took the final game and match after a long deuce game.
Maria’s next tournament is the Open GDF Suez in Paris, France which begins on 27th January.
