Maria moves through in Brisbane

Maria won her second match at the Brisbane International to advance to the semis in her first tournament since August. Maria defeated world no.30 Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 4-6 6-3 6-2 in exactly two hours.

After the dropping the first set against the Estonian, Maria took control of the match when she broke to lead 4-2 in the second set. All Maria had to do in the set was hold her serve and that is what she did and she won the set on a powerful backhand crosscourt winner.

The momentum continued in the third set as Maria broke Kanepi’s serve in the third game when Kanepi hit a shot out. Maria won four of the next five games and wrapped up victory with an ace on her second match point.
