Maria moves on in Madrid

Maria defeated Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania 7-5 6-2 to advance to the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open. The match lasted an hour and 36 minutes.

Dulgheru got the first break of the match in the seventh game to lead 4-3. Maria levelled the set in the next game by breaking Dulgheru when Dulgheru hit a shot long. Both players held their serves until the final game of the set when Maria broke Dulgheru’s serve and won the set when Dulgheru hit a shot wide on her third set point in exactly an hour.

In the second set, Maria hit a backhand down the line winner to get the first break to lead 3-1. In the final game of the match, Maria broke Dulgheru’s serve again as Dulgheru hit a backhand into the net on matchpoint as Maria advanced to the last 32.

In the second round, Maria will face world no.55 Christina McHale of the United States. This match will be played on Tuesday on Manolo Santana Court at around 9.30 PM local time.
