Maria started her Wimbledon 2013 campaign with a win as she defeated Kristina Mladenovic of France to advance to the second round. Maria won 7-6 6-3 in an hour and 42 minutes.
In the twelve games of the first set, there was only one break point which Maria saved in the eighth game. The set was decided by a tie-break which Maria won 7-5 with a volley winner. The set lasted 57 minutes.
Maria got the first break of the match in the second set to lead 3-1 when Mladenovic hit a forehand long. At 5-3 40-0 on Maria’s serve, Mladenovic hit a shot long as Maria moved into the last 64.
In Wednesday’s second round match, Maria will play world no.131 Michelle Larcher De Brito of Portugal. Maria has never played the 20-year-old before.
