Maria is through to the third round of the US Open in New York after another three-set battle as she defeated Timea Babos of Hungary 6-7 6-4 6-1. The match lasted two hours and 19 minutes.
Maria started the match slowly as she went down an early break and was always behind in the set as her opponent won it in a tie-break 7-4.
The match started to change to Maria’s side in the second set as she got an early break to lead 1-0. Babos got the break back in the fourth game to level the set 2-2 but the momentum switched firmly to Maria’s side of the court when she broke Babos to lead 4-3. Serving for the set at 5-4, Maria held her serve to love as a backhand long by Babos sealed the set for Maria.
The momentum switch continued in the third set as Maria dropped only one game on her way to the third round.
In Friday’s third round match, Maria will play world No.139 Sofia Kenin of the United States. Maria has never played the 18-year-old before.
