Maria has continued her unbeaten run under the lights at the US Open in New York as she advanced to the third round.
In a match that finished after midnight, Maria defeated Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-2 7-5 in an hour and 50 minutes.
The first set lasted 50 minutes as Maria got an early break to lead 2-0 and broke again to take the set 6-2 when Cirstea netted a backhand.
Cirstea took an early lead in second set as she built a 3-1 lead.In the eighth game, Maria broke her opponent to level the set 4-4 when Cirstea double-faulted. Maria’s serve was broken in the next game as Cirstea gave herself a chance to serve for the set but Maria broke the Romanian when Cirstea hit a forehand out as she levelled the set 5-5. Maria took control of the set as she only dropped one point in the next two games as she wrapped up the win on match point when Cirstea netted a backhand.
In Saturday’s third round match, Maria will face no.10 seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia. Maria has played the 2017 French Open champion once before in the quarters in Rome earlier this year and won 6-7 6-4 7-5.
