Maria moved through to the semis of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany after posting a straight sets win over world No.73 Anett Kontaveit of Estonia.
Maria defeated the 21-year-old 6-3 6-4 in an hour and 23 minutes.
In the first set, Maria got the first break to lead 4-3 when Kontaveit netted a backhand. At 5-3, Kontaveit was serving and Maria broke her opponent again with a backhand down-the-line winner to take the set 6-3 in 35 minutes.
The second set was closer as Maria broke the Estonian to lead 3-1 but was immediately broken back in the next game as Kontaveit got the set back on serve. Maria got a second break in the set to lead 4-2 when Kontaveit hit a forehand long. At 5-3, Maria was serving for the match but on her fifth break point, Kontaveit was able to break Maria but Maria re-grouped in the next game and was able to break her opponent to book a spot in the last four when a forehand from Kontaveit sailed long.
In Saturday’s semi-final, Maria will play world No.19 Kristina Mladenovic of France. Maria has played the 23-year-old once before in the first round of Wimbledon in 2013 and won 7-6 6-3.
