Maria moves into Madrid third round

Maria is into the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open in Madrid, Spain after a 7-5 6-1 win over Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania.

The match took an hour and 32 minutes as Maria won her fourth consecutive match against the Romanian.

Maria got off to a slow start as her serve was broken in the first game. At 2-3, Maria got the set back on serve when her opponent hit a backhand long. In the final game of the set at 6-5 on Begu’s serve, after a long rally, Maria hit a forehand down the line winner on her third set point as she wrapped up the set 7-5 in 63 minutes.

The momentum shifted to Maria’s side of the court in the second set as she dropped only one game and wrapped up the win on her third match point when her opponent netted a forehand. At one point, in the set Maria won 19 straight points as the set only lasted 20 minutes.

In the third round, Maria will play world no.22 Kristina Mladenovic of France on Wednesday. Maria has played the 24-year-old twice before and the series is tied 1-1. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
