Maria lights up Singapore

Maria put on a dazzling display of tennis at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals in Singapore as she defeated top seed Simona Halep of Romania. Maria won 6-4 6-4 in an hour and 54 minutes.

In the first set, Maria got the first break to lead 2-0 when Halep hit a forehand out. In the next game, Halep broke Maria’s serve to get the set back on serve. At 5-4, Maria broke for a second time as she took the set 6-4 in 54 minutes.

Maria’s strong play continued in the second set as she broke to lead 2-0 after a marathon game. A swinging forehand volley gave Maria a second break to lead 5-1. Halep then won three games in a row to get the set back on serve. At the changeover, Maria called her coach Sven Groeneveld for some on-court coaching advice and in the next game broke Halep to take the set and the match.

Maria hasn’t qualified yet for the last four but she will play her final round robin match against Flavia Pennetta of Italy on Thursday.
