Maria’s run at the US Open is over as she was knocked out in the fourth round by No.10 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark by the score 4-6 6-2 2-6. The battle in Arthur Ashe Stadium lasted two hours and 37 minutes.
In a very physical match in hot and humid conditions, Wozniacki got the first break of the match to lead 2-0. In the fifth game, Wozniacki hit a forehand long on break point as Maria got the set back on serve but Wozniacki broke Maria’s serve in the final game of the set to win 6-4.
In the second set, two breaks of serve were enough for Maria to take the second set 6-2 in 59 minutes.
The WTA’s extreme heat policy was in effect at the beginning of the third set as both players had a ten minute break. When play resumed, Wozniacki came out and managed to take the set 6-2 to take the match.
The Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open in Wuhan, China is Maria’s next tournament beginning on September 21st.
