Maria battled through to the quarters of the US Open after she defeated No.19 seed Nadia Petrova of Russia 6-1 4-6 6-4 in a match time of two hours and 13 minutes.
In the first set, Maria got the first break to lead 3-1 when Petrova hit a shot long. Maria extended her lead in the set when she broke Petrova as Petrova hit a shot in the net to lead 5-1. In the final game of the set, Maria hit a backhand down the line which Petrova was unable to return, and that gave Maria two set points and only one is needed as Maria hit a solid second serve out wide that Petrova hit long.
Petrova took a 4-0 lead in the second set, Maria managed to win the next three games to get the set back on serve but Petrova took two of the next three games to go to a decisive third set.
At the beginning of the third set, Petrova took a 2-0 lead but rain suspended play for an hour and 13 minutes. When play resumed, Maria came back and took full control of the match as she won six of the eight games to book her spot in her first US Open quarter-final since 2006.
In Tuesday’s quarter-final match, Maria will play No.11 seed Marion Bartoli of France. Maria has played Bartoli four times before and leads the series 4-0, here are the matches they have played against each other:
