Maria is through to the quarters of the Shenzhen Open in Shenzhen, China after a three set battle against Alison Riske of the United States.
The match took two hours and 22 minutes as Maria won 4-6 6-3 6-2 over the 27-year-old.
In the three matches, Maria has played against Riske, this is the second time that the American has won a set against Maria. Throughout the match, Maria broke Riske five times as Maria dropped her own serve three times.
Riske was up a set and a break in the second set but Maria fought back to win five of the six remaining games in the set to win the set 6-3. Maria got an early break in the third set but Riske got the break back, Maria re-grouped and got two more breaks to edge into the last eight.
After the win, Maria said:
“I’m glad I got this kind of match. Although I would’ve wanted a quick and easy victory, these are the kind of matches that you need, especially with such a short preparation going into the Australian Open in terms of match play. I’m just glad that I came back, she played a really great match and as I said to her at the net, I thought it was a great quality match. In the end, I won it so I have another opportunity to keep going.”
In Thursday’s quarter-final match, Maria will face world no.66 Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan. Maria has played the 24-year-old twice before and leads the series 2-0. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
