Maria is through to the quarters of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, Italy after a 6-3 6-3 win over Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia. The match lasted an hour and 31 minutes as Maria advanced to the last 8 of this tournament for the sixth time.
Maria was broken in the first game of the match but broke Jovanovski’s serve twice to take the set 6-3 in 43 minutes.
In the second set, in the nine games played, there were six breaks of serve but Maria stepped up on the important points as she wrapped up the set 6-3.
After the match, Maria said: “Today I just had to be very patient and solid. I had a tricky opponent and not easy conditions – the wind was pretty swirly out on the court, so I just had to stay steady. Despite a couple of breaks back and forth in the second set, I was really happy to finish so strongly.”
Throughout the match, Maria had a first serve percentage of 53% and won 65% of points on first serve and 46% of points on second serve. Maria had 23 winners to 22 unforced errors.
