Maria came from a set down to defeat No.19 seed Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium to advance to the quarters of the Sony Open Tennis in Miami. Maria won 3-6 6-4 6-1 in two hours and four minutes.
Maria started the first set slowly as Flipkens built a 4-0 lead. Maria got one of the breaks back in the fifth game but the lead was too big as Flipkens won the set 6-3.
It was Maria’s turn to start the set strongly as she took a 4-1 lead. At 5-3, Maria was broken serving for the set, but in the next game Maria broke Flipkens to love and won the set when Flipkens hit a forehand into the net.
Maria carried the winning momentum into the third set as she got an early break to lead 2-0 with a forehand winner. From that point on, Maria dropped only one more game on her way to the quarters.
In Tuesday’s quarters, Maria will play No.8 seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic. Maria has played Kvitova six times before and leads the series 4-2, here are the matches they have played against each other:
