Maria is through to the fourth round of the Sony Open Tennis in Miami after she defeated No.29 seed Elena Vesnina of Russia. Maria won 6-4 6-2 in an hour and 49 minutes.
Vesnina got the first break of the set to lead 3-1, Maria got the break back in the next game when Vesnina hit a forehand long. After a long game on Vesnina’s serve, Maria broke to lead 4-3 when Vesnina double-faulted. Maria won two of the next three games to take the set 6-4 in 6-4 minutes.
Maria broke Vesnina’s serve to lead 2-1 when Vesnina hit a shot long and again to lead 4-1 when Vesnina hit a shot into the net. At 5-2 40-15 on Maria’s serve, Vesnina hit a shot long as Maria booked her spot in the fourth round.
In Mondays’s fourth round match, Maria will play No.21 seed Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic. The match will start at around 9.00 PM local time (6.00 PM PT and 1.00 AM CET on Tuesday).
