Maria is through to the quarters of the Australian Open in Melbourne after a 6-3 6-0 win over No.21 seed Peng Shuai of China. The match lasted 75 minutes as Maria advanced to her seventh appearance in the quarters at this event.
The first set lasted 39 minutes as Maria got the first break of serve to lead 4-2 with a forehand winner. In the next game the Chinese player got the set back on serve by breaking Maria. Maria broke again to lead 5-3 when Peng netted a forehand. Maria stepped up to serve for the set and delivered as she served it out to love and won set point when Peng sent a forehand long.
The momentum Maria got from taking the first set continued in the second set as she didn’t drop another game and from 4-3 up in the first set won eight consecutive games to book her spot in the last 8.
On Tuesday, Maria will play No.7 seed Eugenie Bouchard of Canada. Maria has played the 20-year-old three times before and leads the series 3-0. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
