Maria is into the semis of the Mutua Madrid Open after a 6-1 3-6 6-3 win over No.5 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark. The match lasted just under two hours as Maria now leads Wozniacki 6-4 in the head-to-head series.
In the first set, Maria came out firing as she won the set in only 30 minutes with breaks in the second and sixth games. Maria had 10 winners to her opponent’s 2 winners.
Maria got an early break in the second set to lead 1-0. Wozniacki got the break back immediately in the next game and got the crucial break to lead 5-3 and won her service game to take the set 6-3.
Wozniacki got the first break of the final set to lead 2-1. Maria re-grouped and broke back in the next game when the Dane dumped a forehand into the set. A backhand winner in the eighth game gave Maria the decisive break to lead 5-3 and stepped out to serve for the match in the next game. Maria delivered and won match point when Wozniacki netted a forehand return.
