Maria is through to the semi-finals of the French Open for the fourth consecutive year after she came through a tough battle against 20-year-old Garbine Muguruza of Spain. Maria won 1-6 7-5 6-1 in two hours and 6 minutes.
Muguruza came out firing in the first set as she dropped only one game to take the set in 27 minutes.
Maria broke Muguruza’s serve for the first time in the third game in the second set when Muguruza double-faulted. In the sixth game, Muguruza broke Maria’s serve to get the set back on serve. Maria got the crucial break to lead 6-5 when Muguruza hit a shot wide. Maria stepped up to serve in the next game and duly held it and won set point when Muguruza dumped a forehand into the net.
In the final set, Muguruza held her serve in the first game and Maria won sixth consecutive games to advance to the semis for the fifth time.
In Thursday’s semi final, Maria will play No.18 seed Eugenie Bouchard of Canada. Maria has played the 20-year-old twice before and leads the series 2-0. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
