Maria defeated world no.42 Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria to advance to the third round of the French Open in Paris. Maria won 7-5 6-2 in an hour and 32 minutes.
Pironkova broke Maria in the first game of the first set. In the eighth game, Maria got the set back on serve when Pironkova hit a shot long. At 6-5, Maria broke Pironkova for the second time and won set point with a lucky net cord. First set: 7-5 in 55 minutes.
Maria got the first break of set two to lead 4-2 with a backhand winner. Maria broke Pironkova’s serve in the final game of the match to book her spot in the third round. Second set: 6-2 in 37 minutes.
In Friday’s third round match, Maria will play Paula Ormaechea of Argentina. Maria has never played the 21-year-old before.
