Maria into Beijing semis

Maria is through to the semis of the China Open in Beijing after her opponent No.5 seed Angelique Kerber of Germany had to retire due to a foot injury. The score was 6-0 3-0 when Kerber retired.

After the match, Maria said:”I thought we played a high level of tennis the first set and a half, and even though the scoreline was 60 30 there were many games that went to deuce. But it’s no secret to everyone we are towards the end of the season. The schedule takes its toll. If it’s bad, you’ve got to take care of it.”

In Saturday’s semis to be played at 3.00 PM local time, Maria will play No.7 seed Li Na of China. Maria leads the series 7-4. Here are the matches they have played against each other:

Maria’s thoughts on the next match: “We have always had really difficult matches. And before I won the last two, she got me a couple of times. We have been back and forth with our results. But she’s a Grand Slam champion and has been Top 10 for a long time. There’s no reason why it shouldn’t be a good match tomorrow.”
